Saikou Chorr, a local doctor at Gunjur, Kombo South, was on Monday paraded before Magistrate Pa Harry Jammeh of the Brikama Magistrates Court, charged with selling or dispensing medical products without a license, contrary to Section 18(1) of the Medicine Act of The Gambia.

In his evidence in chief, Masanneh Sanyang, a police officer attached to Gunjur Police Station told the court that on the 10th  of August, one Lamin Jeng lodged a complaint at their station that his sister, Mariama Jeng, was injected by the accused resulting her experiencing some bodily disorders.

According to Sanyang, they (the police) visited the said Mariama Jeng and later took her to the Brikama Health Centre for medical attention. “She was admitted but  was later referred to the Royal Victoria Teaching Hospital,” Sanyang said.

According to Sanyang, they visited the accused person’s home and on arrival, found him attending to other patients. “He was invited for questioning at the Gunjur Police Station where he was cautioned in the presence of an independent witness, without force or intimidation,” Corporal Sanyang told the court. He added that one Corporal Sowe also took a voluntary statement from the accused. He said the accused was then charged and brought to court.

When asked by the presiding magistrate what kinds of sicknesses he cures, the accused responded that he can cure HIV/AIDS, impotency, asthma and sore throat and stomach pain.

Asked by the presiding magistrate whether he is still injecting patients, he responded he had stopped since the day he was arrested.

He added that it is the patience who are now suffering from the consequences because there is no one to cure them.

Magistrate Jammeh then urged him to stop the treatments and adjourned the case to October 14.
