2007 Brufut Marathon Set To Discourage Illegal Migration

The 13th edition of the annual Brufut Marathon Run jointly sponsored by Taf Holding and Friends of the Gambia scheduled to take place on December 8 2007 will draw attention to the plight of men and women who endanger their lives by engaging in risky journeys abroad.

The theme of this year’s marathon is run against illegal migration.

Participants from other countries will take part in the marathon.

According to the Brufut Marathon Committee, using this form of sports to raise funds and help the needy has proven worthwhile since over the years they have been able to give support to many students, Brufut Health Centre and the Jammeh Foundation for Peace Hospital.

This year’s marathon will feature 1.5 kilometres for males starting at the Kairaba Avenue Traffic Lights to Brufut and 8kilometres for the female category from Brusubi roundabout to Brufut.

There will also be a cycling race from the July 22nd Square in Banjul to Brufut, Wheel Chair races from Brufut roundabout to Brufut and from Brufut Gamtel to Brufut Lower Basic school.

Another interesting event will be the Kanyeleng and children race to take place in Brufut.

Demba Jatta, chief registration officer of the Brufut Marathon Committee, said the thirty dalasis registration fee is free for the wheel chair, the Kanyeleleng and the children races.

He said, “ When you register, you will be issued a receipt bearing your name, start number and race for which you have registered”

He said various registration points have been identified for the event.

According to him, the registration point for those living in Serrekunda and its environs are Lamin Dibba or Seedy Bojang at the Daily Observer newspaper and Sainabou Kujabi at The Point newspaper.

Others, he said, are Mr Demba for cycling race at the Independence Stadium, Mariama Saine Brufut Upper Basic School on 9723920/7289991, Dembo Jatta in Brufut on 9990258 and Alieu Jallow on 9992169.
