UK nurses speak on traditional medicine

Tuesday, May 8, 2007

public health nurses with a lecturer, Mr. Sean, from John Mord University, in the UK recently visited Dr Abubacarr a traditional healer in Brufut, Ghana Town.

The visit was meant for the visiting public health nurses and their lecturer to familiarise them with traditional medicine. In receiving the delegation, Dr Abubacarr told them the importance of traditional medicine and the challenges that lie ahead. According to him, traditional medicine is recognised in many parts of the world but its challenges are many.

He added that sustainability is a major problem “because we get traditional medicine from the flora and fauna.”  In The Gambia, he said, there should be plans for a regional botanical garden for multi-purpose uses.

In a brief statement Mr. SB Fofana, the Public Relations Officer, and Dr Abubacarr told the visiting nurses that a lot has been achieved in the sector of traditional medicines but what is still lacking is partnership development to expand and organise the whole sector.
