Jaliba Kuyateh, the king of Gambian Kora, has received a well deserved award from the Brufut Marathon Run Association (BMRA) on Wednesday 4th July 2007.
Jaliba Kuyateh was presented a certificate of recognition in honour of his outstanding contribution promoting Gambian culture at a fundraising show and dance held at Brufut Lower Basic School.
In a brief remarks before the presentation of the certificate, Mamudou Max Jallow Chairman Board of Directors, BMRA congratulated Jaliba Kuyateh. He emphasised that Jaliba Kuyateh is honourable, not based on political position but a man recognised world wide for his outstanding contribution in promoting Gambia culture through music ‘Kora’. Max described Hon. Jaliba Kuyateh and Kumareh Band as professional musicians and based on their professional recognition all over the world the association felt it necessary to honour Jaliba and his Band. Max further call on the general public to call Hon. Jaliba Kuyateh. He informed the distinguish guest that this year would mark 13 years since the formation of BMRA and patronised Jaliba Kuyateh for the past 10 years. He proudly said that the association sponsored more than 250 school children in Brufut, supported the clinic etc. Max thanked the partners and sponsors of BMRA for making the annual event successful. He disclosed that this year, the famous event is scheduled 8th December, 2007.
In receiving the certificate, Jaliba Kuyateh thanked members of BMRA for the gesture. He expressed great satisfaction in receiving the certificate on behalf of the band. Mrs. Marie Joof Health Officer of the association presented the certificate. However, many students in Brufut including parents and distinguish invited guests namely 7 sisters of Tujereng, Batokunku and Tanji graced the dance while Dr. Olugander, a young Gambian musician entertained the school children before Honourable Jaliba Kuyateh took centre stage.
