Pregnant lady convicted

The Bundung Magistrates Court, presided over by Magistrate Kumba Sillah-Camara, on Wednesday 25, March, convicted one Haddy Ndoy for willful damage to property.

According to the charge sheet, on October 21, 2008, the accused damaged the wind screen of a taxi driven  by one Madi Nget after a dispute erupted between the two in Churchill’s Town. The police called two witnesses whose testimonies corroborated each other.

The presiding magistrate sentenced the accused to a fine of D2,000, in default to serve a one-year imprisonment term and further ordered her to pay a compensation of D5000 to the complainant, in default to serve another one year jail term.

In a note of sympathetic understanding, the magistrate said due to the accused’s pregnancy, the fines will be suspended until March 1, 2010, and if she fails to pay both fines the two sentences will run concurrently. Haddy was also asked to provide the court with one Gambian surety. The IGP was represented by Corporal Njie.
