Fifty female farmers conclude training

Friday, October 17, 2008

At least fifty (50) female farmers on Sunday October 12, concluded a four-day capacity building program on rice and aqua-culture at Pacharr in the Lower Fulladu District, CRR South.

Topics covered were rice agronomy, gender issues and aqua culture.  The capacity building workshop was organized by the Farmer Managed Rice Irrigation Project and funded by the ADB.

In his remarks, the principal fisheries officer, Nfamara Darboe, said the objective of the capacity building was to prepare the farmers in the project intervention areas which are Pacharr and Sambel Kunda in the CRR South.  He noted that this will help ensure the widespread adoption of rice-fish culture.

Mr Darboe further pointed out that the training will increase skills, techniques and knowledge of the farming community in the project’s intervention areas. He asserted that if farmers are trained on rice-fish culture, it will go a long way in improving rice and fish production and productivity in the intervention areas.  He urged them to take the training seriously as its aim was to equip them with the necessary skills and techniques.
