Captain Saikou Seckan has said that as far as the March 21st foiled coup plot is concerned, those involved included Captain Bunja Darboe, Captain Wassa Camara, Captain Abdoukarim Jah, Captain Pierre Mendy, Lieutenant MA Bah, Second Lieutenant Pharing Sanyang, Lance Corporal Alagie Nying, Alieu Jobe, Tamsir Jassey, and the Honorable Demba Dem.
Captain Seckan made this revelation in the ongoing treason trial before Justice Avirl Anin Yeboah at the High Court yesterday.
In his testimony, Captain Seckan recalled a day when the former Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Col Ndure Cham visited his office and immediately after his departure he (Captain Seckan) called the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) and explained to them what had transpired between him and the former CDS Ndure Cham.
According to him, the NIA officers asked him to report to their headquarters but he suggested to them to meet at a different place. Captain Seckan further revealed that he afterwards received a phone call from Captain Bunja Darboe who invited him to a meeting at Labato Bar and Restaurant in Fajara at 20:00 hours.
Captain Seckan said that at 15:00 hours, he saw the former CDS parking his car and going to one Captain Dem’s office where he found him with some officers before he proceeded to his office, where the former CDS met him and informed him that he was just from a Security Council meeting but nothing was mentioned about the coup plot.
Captain Seckan added that the former CDS reaffirmed to him that the coup would be a success and gave him a list of those to be arrested. He said the former CDS further instructed him to shoot anyone who resisted arrest otherwise he would also be shot because there were other soldiers monitoring him.
Captain Seckan said upon the former CDS’ departure, he received a phone call from Captain Bunja Darboe who informed him that the meeting at Labato had been cancelled and that the operation would start at 11:00 pm.
Captain Seckan finally stated that the former CDS told him that President Yahya Jammeh who was then in Mauritania was aware of the coup plot. At this juncture Justice Yeboah adjourned the case to the 8th and 9th of November for continuation.
