Black whale discovered at Fajara beach

africa » gambia » fajara
Thursday, December 06, 2007
Beach goers and residents of Fajara, yesterday, in the early hours of the morning, received news of the presence of a rare mammal - a black whale - on the beachside behind Leybato Beach Hotel.

The whale, measuring 5 and a half meters long and a meter in width was found lying on the beachside.

According to some people, the whale might have arrived at the beach due to the heavy waves at sea. Others believed that the whale was seriously wounded by fishermen at sea, which resulted in its unconscious state upon arrival at the beach.

Our reporters, who went to the scene, discovered that certain parts of the external features of the whale, such as the flippers, the fluke, the tail stock and dorsal fin were removed by people who first came to witness the scene. The streamlined body of the whale was also punctured by what many described as the bullet wound that led to the whale’s arrival on the beach.

Thousands of people gathered at the scene to catch a glimpse of the mammal, while others took records of the event.

A whale is a large marine mammal. It breaths through a blowhole at the top of its head, which evolves from the nasal passage. It also keeps itself warm with an insulating layer of blubber.
