A week-long sensitization training workshop on HIV/AIDS, organised by The Gambia Armed Forces, began on Monday, at the Fajara Barracks.

The workshop, which was sponsored by the Embassy of the United States of America, brought together 124 participants, mostly private soldiers of The Gambia Armed Forces.

In his welcoming remarks, Lt. Col. Yakuba Drammeh, on behalf of Major General Lang Tombong Tamba, highlighted the importance of the workshop noting that this was not the first of its kind to be organised by the Armed Forces.  He told the participants to be serious with the workshop.

He advised them to disseminate the information to those who did not have the opportunity to attain the workshop as HIV/AIDS is a disease of global concern.

For his part, the US ambassador, Barry L. Wells, emphasised the significance of the workshop.

According to Ambassador Wells, all hands must be on deck in the fight against HIV/AIDS.  He told the participants that the US will continue to support The Gambia Armed Forces.  Ambassador Wells also commended the Armed Forces for their vibrant contribution in this endeavour.

Other speakers at the ceremony included Lt. Seedy Touray, medical officer, Gambia Armed Forces and Sergeant Talla Camara.
