A Belgian charity, VZW DE Gambia VRIENDEN, through Jam-Belg Association in Jambanjelly yesterday donated educational equipment such as computers , toys , first aid boxes , wheel chairs and children’s bicycles along with medical items to Jambanjelly Day Care Centre at a ceremony held at the school .The items are worth over D65,000.
According to the President of the Association, Mr Patrick De Vos his organization has a school project and is sponsoring 250 children.
He said that charity pays everything for these children and has established a youth centre in Jambanjelly, and a clinic in Somita.
“Computers have been installed in the youth centre so young people can learn how to use them,” he said adding that his organization has also built a fully-equipped computer centre in Bakoteh where internet use is being taught.
He continued that his organization has also built a school called the Nyodema Nursery school and equipped it with photocopiers and an internet café.
“The organization comes to The Gambia every year in November with a forty-foot container loaded with equipment and supplies”.
According to Mr De Vos he has “come to know the hospitality of the community of Jambanjelly through one Ousman Darboe who is a resident of the area.
He further revealed that his organization is active in six places namely Jambanjelly, Manjaikunda, Bakoteh, Siffoe, Sukuta and Banjul.
For his part Mr Baboucarr Jammeh heard of Jambanjelly Day Care Centre thanked the Belgian charity for their generosity. He revealed that the link between the charity and the local community started four years ago, adding that the charity is now sponsoring 46 children in his school.
Mr Fabba Jammeh, the Secretary of Jam-Belg Association expressed happiness, saying he could not express his feelings in words. He described the charity as a Baobab tree because of its strength and vitality.
In his speech, Mr Ousman Daboe thanked the President of the Charity, Mr Patrick De Vos for extending each year the hand of support to Jambanjelly. He also commended the women of the local community for sending their children to school.
