Over five hundred people from Lower Saloum and Fulladu Districts in the Central River Region North and South last Wednesday converged at President Yahya Jammeh’s rice farm in Janjangbureh to help weed the farm.

The farm is measured at two hundred and seventy-five hectares with different varieties of crops.

Speaking at the ceremony, Alhagie Ganyie Touray, the governor of the region, commended the people of his region for the laudable move. He emphasized that the only way to secure food security is to venture into farming and urged people to always show commitment and hard work.

Governor Touray then pointed out that the global food crisis can only be eradicated if people go back to the land and cultivate more food, noting that farming is the only way to ensure food self-sufficiency in the region.  He then urged the youths to embark on agricultural production.

The chief of Lower Saloum, Ali Jay Touray, said the people of Lower Saloum are ready to answer to President Jammeh’s call at anytime due to his unflinching support to the welfare of Gambian people.  He asserted that we can only overcome the global food crisis if we venture into agricultural activities.  He thanked the people of Lower Saloum for their loyalty.

For his part, Momodou Lamin Baldeh, the chief of Lower Fulladu West highlighted the major developments his people enjoy under the Jammeh administration.

He added that no nation can attain its goals if it neglects agriculture and urged the youths to venture into farming as agriculture is the backbone of the Gambian economy.
