Banjul Breweries has pledged a gift of D1 million, as part of its contribution to complement government’s efforts in four key priority areas namely health, education, agriculture, environment and reforestration. This was disclosed last Friday, during the commemoration of the company’s 30th anniversary at a ceremony held at its premises in the Kanifing Industrial Estate.

Speaking at the occasion, Abdou Kolley, Secretary of State for Trade, Industry and Employment highlighted the crucial role that industries play in the economy of any nation.

He described industrialisation as a vital element in the fight against poverty.  He added that the establishment of Banjul Breweries Limited and the continued progress to date help  to build a solid industrial base for The Gambia.

SoS Colley called on the management of Banjul Breweries Ltd and other Gambian businesses institutions to redouble their efforts in a bid to explore new markets within the sub-region in the light of the market access opportunities offered by the Ecowas Trade Liberalisation Scheme (ETLS).

SoS Colley further mentioned the success registered by Banjul Breweries over the years, which he said cannot have been realised without the strong and cordial relations between the management and the workforce.

He then stated that in recognition of the importance of good relations, the government under his department of state undertook to review the Labour Act 1990.

“Am glad to report that in September 2007, the National Assembly passed the new Labour Bill which seeks to incorporate in the basic national legislation on labour matters, the International Labour Organisation conventions ratified by The Gambia in line with government objectives to promote social justice and internationally recognised human and labour rights,” he said.

For her part, Fatou Sinyang Mergan, Banjul Breweries’ Financial Controller, who chaired the ceremony commended The Gambia government for creating the enabling and conducive environment for them to operate as a liability company. She further registered her appreciation and gratitude and sought further support to ensure the survival of the manufacturing sector in The Gambia.

She also thanked the people behind the success of Banjul Breweries Limited, the staff, for their hardwork and continuous loyalty, and finally thanked their distributors and wholesalers for their belief in their quality products.

Christophe Steinwehe, chairman of the board of the directors of Banjul Breweries Ltd reiterated Banjul Breweries efforts in providing quality services to its customers.
