Six days after kissing the University of the Gambia Students Union (UTGSU) a “goodbye”, the UTGSU president has rescinded his resignation, the Daily Observer was informed.
According to sources, this dramatic U-turn was inspired by the outcome of the executive meeting of the union at the UTG, during which members appealed to Mr Cham to continue steering the presidency until the end of his tenure in January, next year.
Contacted on this development, Mr Cham declined to comment but his deputy, Mustapha Kah, confirmed the story to the Daily Observer.
He said that Mr Cham’s comeback as the president was preceded by an executive committee meeting, attended by Molloh Jallow, chairman of the Advisory Committee, Malick Konuteh, chairman of the IEC University, and Cham himself.
“We felt that it is premature for Mr Cham to resign barely a month before the end of his tenure. This is why we decided to convince him to come back as the president, in the interest of the students of the university. We are happy that he is back,” he said.
Mr Kah implored the students of the university, its administration, and the government to continue supporting the union in its programme of activities.
It could be recalled that Kemo Cham tendered his resignation for what he described as the “implantation of an undermining force within the executive body of the union”. However, with this development, many believed that certain reforms by the president which were pushed aside by students executive will be re-tabled for consideration.
