Marabout gets suspended sentence

Principal Magistrate Moses Richards of the Kanifing Magistrate’s Court yesterday sentenced one Modou Lamin Hydara, a marabout, to 2 years of which the accused has already served a one -year prison term.

Magistrate Richards sentenced the accused after he changed his plea from not guilty to guilty on charges of intent to exercise witchcraft and obtaining 317 grams of gold from a lady. Mr. Hydara has been convicted on similar charges in the past years before the Magistrate and other Magistrate in the Kainifing Magistrate Court.

In his plea of mitigation, he told the court that he is sick and has already spent sixteen months in the remand wing of the State Central prison.

Mr. Hydara further promised the court that he will never involve himself in such activities.

Handing down his judgement Magistrate Richards said he has warned the accused in the past, and believes that the accused would always be brought to the court again.

Mr. Hydara then sentenced the accused to one month in jail.
