Maid ordered to repay about D20,000

Magistrate Pa Harry Jammeh of the Kanifing Magistrates’ Court, on Monday, sentenced Bana Rose Jarju, a house maid, to a mandatory jail term of one month with hard labour, after she pleaded guilty to charges of stealing D30,000 from her employer, Fatima Mahmoud of Manjai Kunda, Serrekunda .

Police Prosecutor 870 Touray told the court that the D10,000, which was recovered from the accused has been given back to the complainant.
In his judgement, Magistrate Jammeh ordered the accused to pay the remaining D19,550 to the complainant or in default serve two years imprisonment with hard labour.
However, the accused’s husband signed an undertaken in court to pay the said amount by monthly installments, which will begin at the end of July, 2007.

Magistrate Jammeh said the offense committed by the accused was a breach of trust bestowed on her by the complainant. He noted that Mrs. Rose Jarju was given the above opportunity to settle the remaining sum because she is a married woman.
