Mariama Tirera and Sidat Bangura were each yesterday convicted and sentenced by Magistrate Pa Harry Jammeh of the Kanifing Magistrates’ Court to pay D3000.00 in default to serve one-year imprisonment.

The duo was brought and charged along with jailed Dam Jeng, an RVTH staff, for aborting a two-month old pregnancy. Mariama Tirera and Sidat Bangura, the first and third accused respectively, pleaded not guilty while the second accused, Dam Jeng, pleaded guilty and was subsequently sentenced to two years in jail.

Magistrate Jammeh told the accused persons that he was sending a message to the public to serve as a deterrent to others in the commission of such offences.
