The pre-season tournament organised by the Kanifing Municipal Sports Committee to help in the preparation for the Gambia Football Association 2008 league for first and second division teams from KMC and surrounding has seen some outstanding contenders.
The ten-team-tournament, divided into two groups of five, is at an advanced stage with both groups still undecided.
With one or two more matches to play for each team, the group semi-finalists are yet to emerge.
In group A, Sait Matty/ Africell are leading so far with 5 points and a game in hand. Because the group remains cumbersome they must win their final game against Kaira Silo today in order to earn a place in the Semis.
Kaira Silo and Tallinding United are both on four points and each have a game in hand. Being both potential semi-finalists, Kaira Silo’s encounter with Sait Matty/Africell is a must win affair if either is to sail through the next stage.
Tallinding United have also the chance of making it but only if they win their remaining match against Brikama; who were playing last evening as we went to press.
After holding two draws, Brikama United are still in the race as they only need to secure six more points in their remaining two matches against Tallinding and bottom place Ham Ham. Ham Ham are currently on two points from three matches. With only a single match to play, Ham Ham are definitely not part of the semi-final line up.
Nema United, Samgar and Steve Biko are the three teams with semi final credentials from group B, as each has eight and seven points. Nema United, who have played all of their matches, are currently leading the group with 8 points and will be waiting on the results of the remaining group matches between Biko and Samger to determine their qualification.
The last two teams Bakau United and Serrekunda East are still to grab a point and will join Ham Ham who have already fallen by the way side.
