KMC/BCC Elect Deputy Mayors

The councilors of the Kanifing Municipality last Friday, shortly after their swearing-in ceremony, convened a meeting at the KMC Chambers at which Yusupha Sanyang, Councilor for Bakoteh Ward, was unanimously elected as Deputy Mayor of the municipality.

Speaking in an interview with The Point shortly after his election, the new Deputy Mayor said environmental sanitation would be the priority of council. He stated that Council would set up sub-committees responsible for licenses and markets, to look into ways of improving the revenue base of the Council. “We will also embark on initiating more physical projects in the Municipality,” he added. Mr. Sanyang obtained a certificate in welding and fabrication from the National Vocational Training Centre in 1987. Mr. Sanyang from 1996-98 attended GTTI and obtained a diploma in Law, and also a certificate in legal studies.

from the Institute of Legal Executives, Bedford, the United Kingdom. Currently he is taking a degree course in international development studies with a minor in Management at the University of The Gambia and is due to complete the programme by June of next year.

Meanwhile in another development the councilors of Banjul City Council elected Nancy Njie as the new Deputy Mayor of the city. During the election she got 8 votes whilst her opponent Mrs. Awa Sillah Njie councilor for Crab Island Ward secured 3 votes.

Miss Njie, addressing Council after her selection, assured the gathering that she will work closely with the entire Council for the development of Banjul. She described her new task as a challenge but promised to live up to expectations.

Both elections were presided over by the respective Mayors.
