The Gambia YMCA, an ecumenical organisation, on Wednesday informed representatives of national youth organisations about there new project on skills training and enterprise development at the at its headquarters in Kainfing.  Joseph Peacock, the project director, said that there will be a comprehensive leadership and management training for the beneficiaries, while energy and resources will be invested in advocacy and unemployment as these relate to the policies and programmes dealing with youth empowerment.

"During the course of the project, The Gambia YMCA will train marginalised and disadvantaged young people in skills of their choice. An ongoing advocacy through the formation of network and advocacy groups on policy development and relevance will be core issues during this period,” Mr Peacock emphasised.

According to Peacock, the project will be carried out in both the rural and urban Gambia.

Omar Gassama, enterprise employment officer of the project, said the project focus on harnessing the potentials of young people become more responsible and productive citizens in their respective communities.

“Over the years, The Gambia YMCA has implemented programmes that are geared towards uplifting the living standard of Gambian young people, rural communities, especially women and youth”.

Amongst it programmes is the newly funded project that is to tackle poverty amongst young people.

It will provide a wide range of capacity building training in areas of horticultural production, agro processing, masonry and brick-laying, auto-mechanic, welding and steel fabrication, construction, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, tailoring, catering, enterprise development and many other informal trainings that are essential for income earning.
