Foundation stone for Islamic school laid

The foundation stone for a new Islamic school was laid at Kerewan village in Kombo North recently. The school is being funded by the Tallinding Islamic Institute under The Gambia Islamic Union.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Vice President of The Gambia Islamic Union, Alhagie Musa Njie, said the union has built 136 Islamic schools across the country since its inception in 1963.

For his part, Husainou AM Touray, Principal Education Officer at the Department of State for Basic and Secondary Education who deputised for SoS Fatou Lamin Faye, said the government of The Gambia has adopted a “broad based” concept of education as the must suitable system, adding that his department is of a strong conviction that through partnership with other stakeholders, the Education for All (EFA) goals can be achieved.

He then commended  The Gambia Islamic Union for the tremendous successes they have achieved, not only in spreading education in The Gambia and beyond  but also in supporting the implementation of the synchronised curriculum materials.

Sheik Basirou Camara, Principal, Tallinding Islamic Institute and the Secretary General of the Union, in his statement said the ultimate aim of the association is to call people towards.

Other speakers  at the ceremony were Alhagie Demba Sanyang, the Chief of Kombo North District,  Dawda Jarju,  Alikalo of Kerewan village, Ebrima Jarju, The Gambia Islamic Union’s Culture and Information Director and Alhagie Abdou K. Sarr.

The foundation stone was laid by Abubacarr Hydara, the Imam of Sinchu Baliya who doubles as the head of the Association of Imams of Kombo North District on behalf of the Chief of Kombo North District.
