The national council of chiefs, under the stewardship of paramount Chief Alhaji Demba Sanyang on Saturday, 23 February, converged in Lamin village, Kombo North, to select a cabinet and executive of chiefs.
The move is aimed at restoring the traditional norms and values The Gambia is known for.
A cabinet of eight chiefs that included the Paramount Chief himself as chairman, was selected.
Dembo Santang Bojang, head chief of Kombo Central, was selected vice chairman; Lamin Queen Jammeh, head chief of Upper Nuimi as secretary; Kebba Ceesay, head chief of Niamina Dankunkou-CRR, as the public relation office; Haji Kulay Camara, head chief of Jimara District, as financial controller; Bakary Badjie, head chief of Foni Bondali, as auditor; Alh. Tabora Manneh, head chief of Lower Nuimi and Yahya Jarjusy, head chief of Jarra East, as cultural officers.
The executive of chiefs include Ajeh Sheriff Jammeh, head chief of Kombo South, as regional representative for Western Region; Fafading Kinteh, head chief of Lower Badibou, as regional representative for North Bank Region; Muhamed Krubally, head chief of Fuladu district as regional representative, Upper River Region; Morro Jawla Sanneh, head chief of Sami as regional representative for Central River Region; Demba Sanyang, head chief of Kiang kwinella as the regional representative; Mustapha Camara, head chief of Foni Bintang as regional representative of Western Region; Lamin Baldeh, head chief of Lower Fulladu as regional representative for Central River Region; and Jim Fatouma Jobe, Jorkadu District as a member.
In an interview with the Daily Observer at his residence in Lamin, Paramount Chief Alhaji Demba Sanyang said that he was astonished by the initiative of the visionary president of the of The Gambia, Alhaji Yaya Jammeh, for appointing me as the first ever Paramount Chief in the history of The Gambia.
The formation of the National Council of chiefs, he added, is a move in the right direction. According to him, the initiative will play a significant role in the administration of justice locally.
Paramount Chief Sanyang further said that the National Council of Seyfo will henceforth establish a good working relationship with the Department of state for Local Goernment and Lands and the office of the President. He also used the opportunity to thank the chiefs, governors, the vice-president, Ajaratou Isatou Njie Saidy, Ismaila Sambou, secretary of state for Local Government, Lands and Religious Affairs, and the entire Gambian people for making his inauguration a success .
