A Daily Observer proof reader along with a seasoned fiction writer recently launched their books at the Golden Beach Hotel along the Senegambia Highway.
Seedy Bojang, the Daily Observer’s proof reader, launched his second book of the year, entitled the Devil’s Lover. His counterpart Derrick, a Briton, co-launched his book entitled The Magician of Serrekunda.
In her speech, the SOS for Tourism, Angela B. Colley stressed the need to read. Speaking as a former teacher, she said a culture of reading is lacking in schools. She attributed this to the many books around that lacked any element of Gambian culture because they come from other countries. “Every writer is influenced by their culture, therefore our children of 14, 15 & 16 may not understand those cultures.
One of our Gambian brothers, Seedy Bojang has written something from our culture that our children can understand.” She urged Gambians to start writing to let our children read about our culture.
Hassum Ceesay, of Art and Culture in reviewing the books said writing was a task and it becomes a more formidable task when published. He described Seedy Bojang as an avid writer.
He said writers are the conscience of the nation.
Hassum Ceesay said the two books dealt with issues of the day especially the negative and political aspect of tourism and ‘marabout’.
Set in the Senegambia area, Derrick’s book has photos of Kachically and Museum. “It is like a journey through the Senegambia area that has been taken for granted”, he said.
The two books also talk about witchcraft, an issue to relevant to Gambian society. It appeals to the general readership. They are relevant to children’s Literature.
Derrick said, “My mystic power comes from Africa. I write the book that comes to me through my dream for the children of Africa. Seedy will be a great author.
SOS for Tourism is opening a door way to the World.
We will need another runway that is my vision.”
