Can Serrekunda East Defend Title?

Tuesday, November 20, 2007

The 2006 Gambia Football Association Zonal champions, Serrekunda East, lost to rivals Bakau 1-0 last Sunday in a keenly contested game at the Serrekunda West Mini-stadium.

The game was mainly dominated by the eastern boys who failed to find the back of the net until in the 90th minutes when the Bakau side capitalised on a counter attack changing the score sheet 1-0 in their favour.

The victory has boosted Bakau’s 2007 zonal campaign after drawing goal-less in their first outing against Banjul and are now second in group A. Bakau will meet Sukuta who are yet to collect a single point, despite scoring a late goal in their last match against Banjul.

On the same day  all in Group A, the City Boys collected three points in their second game after thrashing Sukuta 2-1. A draw for Banjul against defending champions Serrekunda East, in their  final game of the group matches will see them through to semi-finals.

Serrekunda East will have to win their final game against Banjul on Tuesday in order to be part of the race for the title.

Brikama are leading Group B after defeating Lamin 2-1 last evening to increase their points to six. Being the only team with six point so far in the championship, Brikama who defeated Gunjur 3-1 in their opening match last week stood comfortably in the group followed by Serrekunda West with 4 points after drawing 1-1 with Gunjur last evening.
