School 4 School, a charity foundation based in the United Kingdom, recently inaugurated a new nursery school at Taibatou village, Kombo South District, Western Region, at a ceremony held at the village.

The Nursery School, supported by Pearson Longman in UK, worth over D850,000, has two classrooms with 45 students, a store, administrative office and a standard water system that is at the same time supplying the village.

Giving an overview of the project, Keluntang Camara, Coordinator of School 4 School, The Gambia, said the project started during his visit in United Kingdom when Debra Steven, informed him about her charity’s willingness to build schools in The Gambia. He said that Debra Steven then decided to build a school in the remote village of Taibatou upon her visit to the country in January, 2007.

For her part, Debra Stevens, a trustee of the charity, said her charity is set up in the United Kingdom to help schools in Africa and form links with them. She said “we are doing that, in a bid for both to exchange ideas in learning, culture, humanitarian,” she said.

She revealed that Taibatou’s twin school-Kippas Greenfield School has already started raising fund for Taibatou, noting that the charity hope to upgrade the school into a Lower Basic school in the near future.

Debra further revealed that her charity is also helping three other schools which includes Jamwally, Jabang and Kunkujang villages, respectively.

Momodou Jallow, Alkalo of the Taibatou village, said this initiative will greatly liberate children from walking long distances to schools in the neighbouring villages. He commended the foundation for bringing education to the doorsteps of their children.
