Wednesday, August 15, 2007

The Gambia National U-17 team, yesterday, continued their good running in the four-nation tournament in Abidjan, organised by the Ivorian Football Federation to mark the 47th Anniversary of nationhood.
After drawing Niger 1-1 and defeating Burkina Faso 2-1 on Saturday, the Darling Scorpions last night upset the host Ivory Coast 2-0.

The Gambia took the lead in the 3rd minute through Wallidan promising and strong striker Sainey Touray alias Ballack.

Sainey Touray, who netted the equaliser against Burkina Faso on Saturday, took the Ivorian defense to surprise by scoring his second goal in the tournament.
With the support of the 20,000 spectators that stormed the stadium in Abidjan, the Elephanteaux of Ivory Coast mounted pressure on the Gambian team.

The Gambia technical team opted for the defense and launched counter attacks on the Ivorian by utilising the speed of Ebou Bojang, Sainey Touray and Mustapha Jatta alias Baka.

Their option was rewarded in the 68th minute with a second goal scored by Abdou Njie on a powerful shot almost in his own half.

With this victory The Gambia are group leaders with 7 points.

The Gambia would play the final on Wednesday August 15, 2007.
