The Ruling Party Wins 131 Seats of  the 150

The Coalition Sopi 2007 has won without surprise the legislative elections held in Senegal on Sunday, 3 June 2007.

According to the provisional results proclaimed yesterday by the National Commission of Votes Registration at the Court of Appeal in Dakar, the Senegalese Democratic Party (PDS) - the ruling party and its partners which support the Senegalese Head of State, Maitre Abdoulaye Wade - has won 131 seats of the 150 that will constitute the next legislature (2007-2012).

The second coalition in terms of results is Takku Defarat Senegal of Robert Sagna, Mayor of Ziguinchor and former candidate during the presidential polls in February 2007.

The coalition has got 3 MPs. The coalitions called And Defar Senegal and War Wi, which have been headed by former ministers, Landing Savane and Modou Diagne Fada, would be represented by 3 National Assembly members.

The party of Serigne Mamoun Niass, the RP, has won 2 seats, while 8 other political parties have got one seat each. But the big looser of the legislative elections is the RPS of Professor Ely Madiodio Fall, which doesn't win a seat.

According to the results, 5.002 533 Senegalese have been registered but only 1.738 185 were able to cast their vote. The turnout was 34.75 per cent. Meanwhile, the political scrutiny towards and during the elections has been described as one of the most unpopular in the political history of Senegal.

The presidential coalition has won in all the 35 departments of the country.

After the provisional results, the Constitutional Court will proclaim the final results in few days.
Maitre Abdoulaye Wade will reshuffle the cabinet after the decision of the court and a new government will be put in place.

The legislative have been free and fair according to the observers and the National Electoral Commission despite some irregularities.

But one Modou Diop, a 25-year-old, has been killed in a clash during the eve of the vote between militants of Thierno Lo, environment's minister, and militants of his competitor Modou Diagne Fada in Darou Mousty in the region of Louga.

It would be recalled that the Senegalese National Assembly deputies (MPs) has been increased from 120 to 150.
