Mr. Babucarr Sinayoko, principal of the Bokaloho skills and multi-purpose centre in Abuko, has recently stated that his school needs to be upgraded in order to meet the standards required by the new certificate courses in social work.
Mr. Sinayoko made his remarks in an interview with this reporter at his office. The programmes operated at the centre include textiles, secretarial, sewing, carpentry, welding and motor mechanics. The school was officially registered and opened in 1993 and the 8 badges who have completed their certificate courses are currently working in higher offices in the country. Mr. Sinayoko said the student population is mainly comprised of early school leavers.
For his part, the deputy head Mr. Saliem Puye said that the school aims to prepare students to become self-employed and be the future independent citizens of The Gambia.
Speaking to The Point, the head girl of the school, Adama Bangula, expressed her satisfaction at being registered as a student and attending the school. She spoke at length with this reporter and said that students at the school, including herself, are ready to utalise the knowledge they are gaining and put their skills to work to enhance The Gambia. “The training takes 3 years and it’s expected to enhance our capacity to apply ourselves”, she said.
She concluded by commending the principal and teaching staff at the school saying they are hardworking, committed and dedicated.
Both the principal and the students called on the Government, NGO’s and philanthropists to come to their aid and help the school to acquire the equipment and furniture they so desperately need.
