As part of the publicity campaign for the up-coming Women and Sports festival, the Deputy Permanent Secretary at the Department of Youth, Sports & Religious Affairs, Mr Ebou Joof deputising for the SoS, last night launched the Organising Committee of the week-long festival which is slated for November 17th to the 23rd, 2006.
Ms Beatrice Allen, the First-Vice-President of the GNOC was selected as the chairperson of the committee.
In his launching statements, Mr Joof spoke of the need for integration of sports among women and girls to ensure their full participation. Mr Joof added that women and girls should be given equal priority and access to sports as in a bid to focus on the importance of women participation in sports. He commended The International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the Gambia National Olympic Committee in particular, for spearheading such a noble initiative.
Speaking earlier, The President of The Gambia National Olympic Committee , Mr Alhagi Abou Dandeh Njie said the hosting of the festival is historic in the history of Gambia sports, adding the Gambia is the first African nation to host the event.
According to Mr Njie, the objective of launching the organising committee is to ensure a nation-wide awareness campaign on the right of women to access sports and to be included in the sporting structures. "We will also launch a national platform that will initiate and promote a national dialogue, push for policy orientation, reactivate sports leadership development among women, and to encourage the larger participation of all women," he said.
For his part, Mr George Gomez, the Executive Secretary of GNOC said the Organising Committee comprised of 12 members including Ms Beatrice Allen who would serve as Chairperson of the festival. According to him the 12 selected members will be given the task of implementing the policies and programmes of the week -long festival.
Mr Sait Mbye, the Director of Youth and Sports commended GNOC for playing a leading role in sports in the sub-region and urged them to continue to work hard.
