Eric Jenkinson, the British High Commissioner to The Gambia, yesterday called on President Yahya Jammeh at State House to bid him farewell after a four-year tour of duty in the country.
Speaking to reporters, soon after his audience with the Gambian leader, Mr Jenkinson said he discussed a wide range of issues with President Jammeh, including the cooperation between the two countries. He added that their discussion touched on modalities on how to fortify the military, judiciary, and education sector, financial governance issues and also police training between the two countries.
“I have some very good memories of my time in The Gambia especially in the countryside. We discussed a lot about the cooperation that has increased tremendously between the two nations in many fields including the military, judiciary, education, financial governance and a host of other issues. We want to maintain the good and honest relation between the two countries and even to increase it where that is possible”, he stated.
The British diplomat revealed that his government has plans to further assist The Gambia in various areas of development. He singled out their support to the upcoming National Assembly and other elections and described the September 22 presidential election as free and fair.
Mr Jenkinson is expected to leave the country on Monday.
