The Chairman of the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), Alhagie Mustapha Carayol, has announced the date for the National Assembly Elections nomination.
Speaking at press conference on Wednesday, Mr. Carayol said that the nomination of candidates would be received by the IEC from Thursday, 4th to Saturday, 6th January, 2007 between the hours of 8 a.m. in the morning and 4.00 p.m. at the IEC regional offices around the country.
He noted that there is no changes with regard to the number of polling stations and counting centres.
However, Mr. Carayol revealed that because of the difficulties that the Commission experienced during the presidential elections, they have decided to increase the number of polling assistants. “We noticed some difficulties during the presidential elections at some polling stations. In order to address these problems, the commission has decided to contract more polling assistants to help direct voters to their appropriate polling station,” he said.
He further stated that electors intending to have their voters cards transferred or replaced would need to comply with the provision of section 35 subsection 1,4 which stipulates that a registered voter may apply for the transfer of his/her voting card by filling a form.
