Reports reaching The Point have it that over D2 million dalasis have gone missing at the VISACA (Village Savings and Credit Association) in Sanyang village, Kombo South.
According to one Saikou Bojang, a brother to the Alkalo of Sanyang who walked into our offices yesterday with his report, there is what he called a serious problem in their village as depositors could not access their monies since July 2006. “Whenever we go there for our monies they keep on saying “Wait, wait till later,” he explained. This situation, he said, is about to lead to a big misunderstanding and problem in the village, prompting the villagers to invite the Central Bank of The Gambia who discovered that over D2 million was unaccounted for.
“I am appealing to the government of The Gambia to come to our aid and investigate the situation as people are really suffering because we cannot access our monies,” Mr. Bojang stated, adding: “My family alone has over D200,000.00 in the bank,” he stressfully noted.
Speaking to this reporter at her farm in Sanyang village on Thursday, Bank Manager Mrs. Manjang Sanyang, alias Ndonting, for her side of the story maintained that until proper auditing is done, those responsible would never be known, adding that since she started work in the bank ten years ago, there has been no auditing at the bank. She said the Central Bank has in its findings that some deposits had not been entered in the cash journal; but reflected only in the pass book and client form.
She added that she didn’t know who used the money in question, noting that there were seven people working in the bank and that therefore one could not point fingers to one person only. She said the money was not taken in one day, otherwise they would have known.
Meanwhile, in connection with the said money scandal, Ndonting was arrested on Monday by the Tujereng Police but was later released.
