NAS Report Reveals

A recent study conducted by the National AIDS Secretariat (NAS) has revealed that female make up greater proportion of people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA).

According to NAS’ National Policy report on HIV/AIDS, HIV infection is higher among female youth between the ages of 15 and 25 years.

While the percentage of female PLWHA is 54%, that of male PLWHA is 45%, the report reveals.

Female appear to be in higher risk due to lack of power in society, the report noted.

The report also stated that in The Gambia, some of the social, cultural, religious and traditional influence and practices relating specifically to sex and sexuality, unfortunately, contribute to increase the vulnerability of girls and women to HIV infection and AIDS.

“They are unable to negotiate safe sex or take decisions regarding relationship and other challenges they face,” the report avers, adding that their inability stems from economic dependence, and early and forced marriage.

Coercive sex, rape, condoning of sexual harassment and rape, also promote transmission of HIV/AIDS, the report added.
