In a move to recognise players’ immense contribution to the development and promotion of the country, the Gambia government is on the verge of allocating monthly stipends to players.
The historical breaking news was revealed by President Jammeh last Tuesday at State House when the Gambia National U-20 team bade farewell to him before leaving for South Africa on their to the African Youth Championship in Congo.
President Jammeh revealed that it is not fare for the players to receive support only when they set for international competition.
“They are responsible people like others and have family to be taking care off and they can not always leave their occupation to come and train for months without been given some thing at the end of the month,” he stressed.
President Jammeh revealed that his cabinet would be sitting on the matter very soon and a fix amount would be disclosed for each player at the end of every month.
President Jammeh also expressed his unhappiness with Gambian people over the way they help the National teams.
“Why should every body wait for me to donate to the teams before they also do so. That is not patriotism and any patriot citizen should help the team without waiting for me as I may decide to help the team behind the cameras,” he challenged.
Dr. Jammeh added that sport is the most quick way of promoting a Country citing the example of the Gambia’s participation to the World U-17 Championship held in Peru in September 2005.
"When we defeated the World championship Brazil 3-1 in our opening game, the name of the Gambia was on the Televisions and Radios stations as well as Newspapers world wide,” he revealed.
