Twenty-seven home-based players have received a call-up from the Gambia Football Association as the nation gears up for yet another Amilcar Cabral Zone II Championship, a regional football tournament for West African nations. The bi-annual championship, which is staged in memory of Amílcar Cabral, an African agronomic engineer, writer and politician, is scheduled to take place in Guinea Bissau from November 22 to December 4, 2007.
The Scorpions team which will commence collective training this morning will be guided by the Spanish coach, Jose Martenez, who will be assisted by Egyptian Tarik Siagy and coach Lamin Sarr.
Seedy Kinteh, President of the Gambia Football Association has told Observer Sports that only home-based players would be selected to represent The Gambia in the eight-team sub-regional tournament, which was first staged in 1979 in the former Portuguese colony of Bissau .
The Gambia have never won the Zone II championship since its inception, but have reached the finals twice - 1980 and 1958 - and have lost both finals to the neighbouring Senegal who have won the championship- a record 8 times. Guinea Conakry are the second record holders, having won it 5 times.
The eight West African nations that participate in the championship are: The Gambia, Mauritania , Guinea Conakry, Sierra Leone, Guinea Bissau, Cape Verde, Senegal and Mali .
