The Gambia’s First Paramount Chief Speaks

Thursday, November 15, 2007

“I know I stand in a challenging position as the county’s first paramount chief and this causes me to face the mighty task to make the difference,” said Mr. Alhaji Demba Sanyang who has become The Gambia’s first appointed paramount chief.

Mr. Sanyang said this recently when The Point approached him to seek his reaction on his newly acquired position and some matters arising. He reflected: “I entered the stage as the first paramount chief in the history of The Gambia and I will do my utmost to live up to the expectations. I am sure all and sundry will be looking up to me as a traditional leader.”

He then implored Gambians to work towards making the country   the best place for humanity. “My goal is to preserve our rich cultures and traditions,” he remarked.

Paramount Chief Sanyang went on to pay tribute to President Alhaji Dr. Yahya A.J.J. Jammeh for his devotion to the welfare of Gambians, adding that everyone should, therefore, support President Jammeh in his strive to transform The Gambia to an enviable nation-state.

Meanwhile, Paramount Chief Sanyang first worked at the Ministry of Local Government upon graduation in 1960. After working there briefly, he moved to Office of the Prime Minister during the colonial era before becoming a catering officer at State House, a position he held for 26 years until 1994, after which, he was chosen to be the catering officer for the state central prison until his appointment as district chief of Kombo North following the removal of Eric Tunde Janneh.
