Gambia name Zone II squad

Friday, November 16, 2007

Despite the absence of the Scorpions head coach, Spanish Jose Martenez, who is currently in his native Spain on a personal trip, assistance coach Lamin Sarr, yesterday, named a 22-man squad for the upcoming Zone II tournament scheduled to take place in Guinea Bissau.

The squad includes players from both the defunct Under 20 and Under 17 teams. Real de Banjul’s Pa Landing Conateh; Steve Biko duo, defender Ousman Koli and forward Habib Kunta have all been included in the squad that is composed of only home-based players.

Ports Authority’s Abdourahman has also been named in the final selection of a national team for the first time, while Wallidan’s George Cole will also re-appear in national colours, after a two-year absence from active football.

The eight-team biannual football tournament for West African nations is scheduled to take place between November 30 to December 10, 2007, in the former Portuguese colony of Guinea Bissau.

The Scorpions will battle it out in Group B with the defending champions, Guinea Conakry, Mali and Cape Verde. The Scorpions’ group has been considered by many pundits as the Group-of-Death in the face of Group A, which features the host nation, Guinea Bissau, Sierra Leone, Mauritania and the six-time winners, Senegal.

Scorpions assistance coach Lamin Sarr told Observer Sports  that his team is responding positively to training, adding that they will go to camp next week as a final build-up to the tournament.

“The players are cooperating and they are responding positively to training. We are yet to be camped, but hopefully, by next Tuesday we will be at camp for a final build-up to the tournament,” Sarr said.
