Ambassador Chang reveals scholarship packages for Gambian students

Dr patrick Chang, Taiwanese Ambassador to The Gambia has revealed that Taiwan has indentified a scholarship package for the graduate students of the University of The Gambia, who wants to pursue their masters and doctorates degree at National Taipei University of Technology.

Ambassador Chang made these remarks on Wednesda, while presenting learning books and five brand new computers on behalf of the National Taipei University of Technology (NTUT) to the University of The Gambia(UTG), at a presentation ceremony held at the Administrative Block, along MDI road, Kanifing.

According to him, these scholarship packages will also include their travel tickets, and then noted that the interest of the UTG is at the heart of President Jammeh.

“Early last year, MoU was signed between the NTUT and the UTG, which symbolises the good cordial relationship that exists between the two countries. Again, 25 Gambian students are currently reading petroleum exploration at Taipei University”, he said.

Ambassador Chang further revealed that a successfully exchange programmes was conducted between the two Universities.

He added that these donated books comprise specialised and unspecialised books which were collected by the NTUT at the end of last year. “In these connections, my Embassy has already planned to set up computer classrooms at Gamtel and send Techinical staff at Sapu. At this point, I wish to assure that my Embassy will continue to support the UTG at all times,” he said.

In response, professor Andreas L Steigen, Vice- Chancellor of the UTG expressed gratitute to the Taiwnese people, through the Embassy for their benevolent gesture which, he described as timely and worthy.

According to him, it has become routine to receive gifts from Taiwan, adding that these donated items will in many ways boost the morals of the UTG.

“These books are donated by our counterpart that’s the NTUT. We are getting books and things are getting better and the UTG now has diverse students that really need books and computers for efffective daily needs,” he said.

Professor Steigen added that they are now getting close to building a Campus at Faraba Banta in the Kombo East District.

“University cannot be built on gifts, but also gifts are necessary, and scholarship is inseperable from student,” he said.

Speaking Earlier, Dr Gumbo Touray, Chairman of International Affairs and Information, commended the Taiwanese people for their gesture.

According to him, many times the UTG received learning material like books and computers from Taiwan.

He assured that the items will be put into good use.

Other speakers at the ceremony included Kemo Cham, President of the UTGSU and Jenung Manneh of the UTG.
