Fioretti Nursery School in Busura Village, Kombo Central on Friday February 23 received a group of British philanthropists from the city of Wales, United Kingdom.
The mission of the group is meant to donate educational materials worth over D100, 000 to the school.
Speaking at the presentation ceremony held at the school ground, the Alkalo of Busura, Omar Faye, expressed gratitude to the philanthropists for the gesture. According to him, they are very much delighted to receive the donors, noting that the provision of a solar panel will greatly help the village. “We are pleased that the items came at the time when the school badly needs assistance,” he said.
For his part, Malick Camara, Headmaster of the school, said the education of young children is crucial as they are the future leaders of the country. He described the donation as timely as the school really needs educational materials to boost their day-to-day activities.
Barbara Hale, the group’s leader, commended the villagers for the tumultuous welcome accorded to them, describing it as a show of unity in the village. “Last year, we came to The Gambia on holiday and happened to have an interest in the school. Coincidentally, there came two people from the village who requested for assistance for this nursery school. Upon our return to the UK, we organised fund-raising programmes and other activities to generate more funds to buy the material which we are donating today. We hope that the materials will be put into good use.
Other speakers at the ceremony included Vanessa Anderson, member of the group, Amadou Bah, facilitator of the link and Habib Faye, Vice Chairman of the VDC.
In a show of appreciation, the school authorities also presented clothes to each member of the group. The ceremony was witnessed by school children and other dignitaries.
The donated items included uniforms, Library books, plastic containers, toys, cassette recorders, sports equipment, and taps for water sewing machine, amongst others.
