Fatoumatta Jahumpa- Ceesay, Speaker of the National Assembly last Thursday received at her office a delegation from the University of The Gambia Student Union and Gamblood.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Speaker of the Assembly thanked the student body for the visit, describing Gambian students as different from others in the sub-region... “I was Deputy Speaker in the Ecowas Parlianment and travelled a lot in the sub-region. During that time I also visited some university campus. [Even though] we don’t have [university] campus, but what we have is better off and we should thank the President for having the foresight and vision to bring up a university to The Gambia. Nobody thought The Gambia would have a university, but today we have more than 600 graduates from the UTG.
She also advised them to be loyal to the government and come together in order to achieve their aims and aspirations.
For his part, Kemo Cham, President of the University Student Union. Said their visit is meant to convey a special congratulatory message to her. ‘We do feel that the university is part and parcel of nation- building. Being the Speaker of the National Assembly, we do know your stance in national development and that we can hardly do without talking with some body like you.
In that regards, we come to extend our congratulations.
In a seperate development, Executive Members of Gamblood, led by their President, Rohey Secka Njie also called on the Speaker to congratulate her on her new appointment, and to brief her on their constraints. This, Mrs. Njie went on, ranges from the lack of vehicles and other materials needed for the smooth running of their operation.
The Speaker for her part thanked them for the courtesy call. On their constraints, the Speaker promised to make it known to groups and organisations that will be in a better position to help them. She also used the occasion to thank President Jammeh for his treatment of HIV/Aids, and Asthma as, according to her, she was cured from her Asthma in 1996, by President Jammeh.
