GPA to Crack Down on Fare Cheats

Tuesday, February 6, 2007
The Gambia Ports Authority (GPA) has launched what it described as an all-out operation against ferry passengers who are hell bent on beating the system when it comes to paying their transport fares.

The operation, which kick-started yesterday morning, will run for one month, and it is aimed at showing zero tolerance for fares cheats.

“The GPA has now employed a zero tolerance policy with respect to people who are in the habit of not paying their transport fares. Any person caught inside the ferry without a ticket shall have to pay twice the stipulated official tariff”” a senior GPA official told this paper.

He added: “The people should understand that maintaining the ferry service is not easy because when there is a breakdown the parts are not available at Jeshwang. We must have foreign currency to be able to get the parts. So let the travelling public cooperate with us.”
