Hassum Cham, the coordinator of the Green Boys and Girls, was on Tuesday, 6th February 2007 remanded at the Mile II Central Prisons for impersonation.
Pa Harry Jammeh of the Kanifing Magistrates’ Court gave the ruling.
According to the prosecution, Hassum Cham on 15 January 2007 wrote a letter on behalf of the Green Boys and Girls to Ousman Jasseh, Managing Director of Ultrasoft, requesting for a donation of D8, 000 to buy jerseys for a supposed football club. Hassum Cham himself signed the letter and copied the Permanent Secretary at the Office of the President and the Secretary of State for Youth, Sports and Religious Affairs.
Hassum Cham then followed up on the letter with a phone call to Mr. Jasseh. During the telephone conversation, he claimed to be Mr. Trawally, the Permanent Secretary at the Office of the President.
Mr. Jasseh instantly became suspicious.
At a subsequent meeting at State House, he asked Mr. Trawally about the telephone call. Mr. Trawally denied ever making any such call and then requested to see a copy of the letter.
Again, on 19 January 2007, Mr. Trawally received another complaint from the manager of Construct Company Limited. Mr. Hassum Cham had called him too, posing as the Permanent Secretary at the Office of the President.
The matter was then reported to the National Intelligence Agency (NIA). When Hassum Cham was confronted with the letter, he owned up to the offence of impersonation.
He is expected back in court on 8th February 2007 for sentencing, having already pleaded guilty.
