Yankuba Touray, Secretary of State for Fisheries and Water Resources, who deputised for the Gambian leader, President Yahya Jammeh yesterday presented 100 bags of rice, 100 drums of 20-litre cooking oil and 100 tins of tomato to the School of Nursing and Midwifery of The Gambia College at a ceremony held at State House.
Speaking at the presentation ceremony, SoS Yankuba Touray, said it was with a deep sense of pride that he represented President Jammeh to deliver the kind gesture to SRN school. He said the donation was a testimony of the Gambian leader’s commitment to the development of education, particularly health.
According to him, President Jammeh has taken giant strides to improve the health sector and the School of Nursing is equally important in this venture. “We have the President himself participating with doctors in curing HIV/Aids and asthma patients. I guess it is through neighbourliness that the President is giving this. I hope this donation will be put into good use”, he concluded.
In receiving the donation, on behalf of the Principal of The Gambia College, Mrs Beatrice Haffner, Head of School of Nursing and Midwifery thanked President Yahya Jammeh for his generosity. She appealed to the Gambian leader to provide a vehicle for them to be able to tranport staff and students during exams.
“The coaster we have is 23 -years-old. Now that the school is expanding and recruiting more nurses, we need another vehicle”, she explained. She gave assurance that the donation would be put into good use. She also called on the Gambian leader to help in the area of training for staff. Binta Bah, a second year student, in her vote of thanks, thanked President Jammeh for his support and assured him that they will forever support him at all times.
