In what could be described as an unprecedented and historic move, the stage is being prepared for The Gambia to host the 2007 edition of Miss Black USA Beauty Pageant.
An estimated number of 40 young, beautiful, eloquent, intelligent belles representing different states in America are expected to participate in this year’s Miss Black USA Pageant, slated for June 1st at the Kairaba Beach Hotel.
Speaking at the official launch of the task force for the Miss Black USA Beauty Pageant, held last Saturday at the Bungalow Beach Hotel, the Vice President, Dr Aja Isatou Njie- Saidy, said that The Gambia is ‘indeed proud’ to be associated with this event which, she added, would be held for the first time outside the United States.
She said: “It is a significant event in that it brings the Diaspora closer to home. Participants and their families will have the opportunity to interact with their Gambian brothers and sisters and their ancestors. For us in The Gambia the event will no doubt help in boosting the tourism sector and building friendship.”
For her part, Karen Arrington, Founder and Acting Chairperson of Miss Black USA Beauty Pageant, said that the entire board of Miss Black USA is grateful to His Excellency President Jammeh and the Gambian people for allowing them to host this historical event on African soil.
According to her the Miss Black USA Pageant is no ordinary pageant, adding that the theme of the 2007 pageant is “A Royal Journey Back to the Land”.
Several dignitaries including the Secretary of State for Tourism and Culture, Angela Colley, the Information Secy, Neneh Macdouall-Gaye, and Dr Ardy Sarge attended the launching of the task force, which was followed by a sumptuous cocktail reception.
