For Allegedly Defaulting in Bill Payment

Friday, April 20, 2007
The National Water and Electricity Company is taking recourse to the law-courts for recovery of its debt. The company’s recent action to drag a Lebanese national, domiciling in America but with a compound in The Gambia, seems to be an indication that the country’s water and electricity company is now adopting a zero-tolerance approach to water and power bill defaulters.

Mr. Mahmud Waly Halsim was early this week arraigned at the Kanifing Magistrates’ Court, chaired by magistrate Mboto, on allegations of defaulting in paying D10, 000 being bill for electricity consumed in his compound on 87 Kairaba Avenue.

But to Mr. Halsim, he was in fact the one owed by NAWEC and not otherwise. He tendered the court two receipts being payments for his electricity bill.

Mr. Halsim pointed out that it was a surprise to him that he was accused of defaulting in paying his bills.

The receipts were admitted as pieces of evidence and marked as exhibits A and B.

The case continues.
