The people of Panchang village in Upper Saloum have inaugurated their first ever mosque in forty years at a big religious ceremony held at the mosque’s ground.
The ceremony was attended by well-known Muslim sheriffs, religious leaders, the Chief of Upper Saloum, the Governor of Central River Region, and the National Assembly member for Upper Saloum
Speaking at the ceremony, Sheikh Sheriff advised the congregation to be good Muslims, to respect prayers and other doctrines of Islam, especially the marriage institution.
He also gave tribute to the late Alkalo of Panchang village who was the founder of the mosque in the early 1970s.
"Alh. Assan Ceesay was a great Muslim brother and helper of the poor and the needy," he said, adding that the people of Panchang village are grateful and proud of him.
Alhaji Janneh, the Governor of CRR, called on the people of Upper Saloum to unite and "respect" the five daily prayers.
He urged the youth of Upper Saloum to embrace Islam and faithfully practise the teachings of the faith.
He also called on the people to support the mosque both morally and financially and maintain the legacy of the former Alkalo of the village.
Other speakers on the occasion included the Chief of Upper Saloum, Malick Mbye and Hon. Sainey Mbaye.
