The Christian Community of Latrikunda (CCLK) and John Paul II., scholarship committee on Friday hosted Bishop RP Ellison’s anniversary celebration as a fundraising dinner for needy students, at a ceremony held at The Gambia Pastoral Institute along Kairaba Avenue.
In his welcoming remarks, Rev. Father Joseph Karbo, Director of The Gambia Pastoral Institute (GPI) welcomed all the participants to the ceremony.
He said that the purpose of this dinner is to raise funds to sponsor needy students for their basic education.
Father Karbo also explained that they want to gain self reliance by raising local funds so that any support that comes will be a supplementary support. He appealed for more donations to assist the needy students.
For her part, Sister Philomena Barry of the John Paul II. Scholarship committee said the scholarship committee was founded in 1992. She added that they are not only contributing for the scholarships but they also want the students to achieve better education.
Bishop Ellison described the ceremony as a worthy course, noting that it is all geared towards promoting education in The Gambia.
Mathaniel Johnson, president of CCLK gave a brief history of the foundation that it was established in 1998. He revealed that the CCLK has granted scholarship to over 70 students up to tertiary level.
“Three years ago, more than 20 early school leavers were enrolled into various vocational centres to be trained on catering and home management among others”, he said.
