Officials of The Gambia Epilepsy Association recently returned from a visit to St Peters, in the United Kingdom.

The aim of the visit was to collaborate and find ways to support the epilepsy patients in The Gambia among other things.

Speaking to the Daily Observer upon their arrival, Philip Chiga, Project Manager, Gambia Epilepsy Association said their visit was successful because they where able to meet with the Governor of the Centre for National Society of Epilepsy in the UK.
He added that they also visited one of the major units of epilepsy patients in the UK where they shared knowledge and experience with experts in epilepsy patienthandling.

He added that they were also able to meet and make general discussions on how to intervene in the project in The Gambia by providing assistance in the areas they can. He further noted that they intend to set up a centre in The Gambia that will meet the basic needs of people suffering from epilepsy.

Mr. Chiga assured that they also want to go on a sensitisation campaign across the country which will include community and schools. He asserted that during their visit, the project also negotiated for a scanning machine that will be handling most of the scanning aspects.

“We also intend to launch a programme in collaboration with DoSH, called Global Campaign Against Epilepsy (GCAE) in The Gambia.  We will also launch a project called Self Reliant Project, which will support and help those with epilepsy to be independent and self reliant and also contribute to the society by creating skills training centres to enhance self employment among epilespsy patients” he said.
