Tuesday, June 12, 2007

Three youngters, Abou Colley, Amadou Baldeh and Lamin Camara have been arrested by personnel of the Police Intervention Unit, who were deployed to evict five different families from their houses in Jabang Village in Kombo North.

The trio was taken into custody by the police in a fierce dispute that erupted at the village in the wake of attempts by members of the Bojang family in Sukuta, who claimed to have secured an order from the Higher Court to evict residents living in Jabang Budori area.

According to our sources, the Bojang Kunda family is claiming ownership of the said area being inhabited by some natives of Jabang Village.
Meanwhile, sources told the Daily Observer that this disturbing incident was quelled following the intervention of Ismaila Sambou, Secretary of State for Local Government and Lands, Pa Jallow, Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency and the Chief Justice, Abdou Karim Savage.

The evicted residents were asked to remain in the area, pending the outcome of further investigations into the matter, the Daily Obserer can reveal.
Speaking to the Daily Observer, Ousman Senghore, said his belongings were thrown out by a group of people who claimed to be executing a High Court order. Mr. Senghore said US$20,000 went missing during the course of the exercise by members of the Bojang family and the PIU personnel. According to him, they were never sermoned in court over the land, adding that they only came to know about the eviction when they were told to vacate.

Baboucarr Bojang, another resident of the area, claimed that he has lost “D25,000” in the incident, adding that this money was given to him by a friend to start a garden project.
Mariam Colley, another victim, expressed surprise with the eviction. She also claimed that her “D11,000” went missing during the incident.

Alagie Colley, who was in his dotage, lamented that he was born and brought up in the compound and challenged the legality of Bojangs’ family ownership of the compound. Mr. Colley called on the authorities to intervene, describing the act as unjust and inhumanly.
Pa Ebrima Colley, Alkalo of Janbang Village, said he was bewildered by the episode. Alkalo Colley said he reported the incident to the Chief of Kombo North and SoS Ismaila Sambou.

Our reporter who was on the ground, made fruitless efforts to speak to the members of the Bojang clan about their side of the story.
