Escaped prisoner gets custodial sentence

Magistrate Sheriff Tabally, the travelling Magistrate at CRR, last Thursday, 7th June, 2007, has imposed a custodial sentence of nine months to Malang Fatty, who was standing trial on criminal charges for unlawful escaped from custody.

Narrating the facts of the case, the Police Prosecutor 1260 Cpl Colley said that the accused, Malang Fatty, escaped on the 11th April, 2006, when the accused with four other prisoners escorted by PO Alhagie Jobe, Sergeant Baba Fatty and other Prisons Officers to collect sand at Lamin Koto.

Vigorous searched was mounted and Mr. Fatty, the accused, was later arrested in Jarra Soma, Lower River Region and brought to Janjangbureh Police Station where he was cautioned and confessed that he was on the run. He was then charged with the offence committed.

After reading the charge sheet to the accused and interpreted in the language he claimed to understand he pleaded guilty and admitted the facts as true and correct but was quick to beg the court for mercy.

In his ruling, Magistrate Tabally said despite the accused did not waste the court’s time, the offence committed would not allow him to go free. Subsequently, the accused was given a custodial sentence of nine months with hard labour with no option of a fine.
