League title race in photo finish

Wednesday, June 20, 2007

Gambia Ports Authority’s 1-1 draw match with Bakau United on Sunday means the winner of the 2007 GFA First Division league title will be decided in a photo finish.

A thrilling conclusion to the race is likely to ensure on Sunday June 24, as Real de Banjul, Gambia Ports Authority, Wallidan and even Gamtel all remain in contention to be crowned the gallant champions.

Real de Banjul currently holds a slim advantage over their three rivals and a win against the embattled Bakau United at the Independence Stadium on Sunday would guarantee the Banjul giants their first major trophy in more than a decade.

However, Gambia Ports Authority, who are currently trailing Real de Banjul by a lone point, and Wallidan, who are two points behind the arch-rival, are likely to have a say in what could be one of the greatest league crescendos in history of GFA First Division league season.

The defending champions, Gambia Ports Authority, will meet fellow title contenders, Gamtel, whilst Wallidan - who must win to have any chance of clinching the title since 2004, host Gambia Armed Forces at Serrekunda West Mini-stadium.

While the battle for league title mounts up, others would be toiling through thick and thin to avoid relegation.

The Bakau Four-Steve Biko, Bakau United, Sea View and Africell/Sait Matty, all have their fate lying in their own hands.

Sea View will meet Steve Biko at Box Bar Mini-stadium in Brikama, while Bakau United will hope their fixture against the title contenders, Real de Banjul, will not prove too big an obstacle to crack. Africell/Sait Matty, who have a slim advantage over fellow strugglers, will meet Hawks and a win will undisputedly see the Africell sponsored side avoid their second relegation in two seasons, irrespective of the outcome of other fixtures.
